Robotic Kidney Surgery
Robotic Nephrectomy Explained
There are two types of nephrectomies: a partial nephrectomy or removal or part of the kidney and a radical nephrectomy or removal the entire kidney and surrounding affected tissue. Traditionally, this was completed as an open procedure. With the invention of the da Vinci® robotic technology, urologists are now opting to perform robotic nephrectomies over the traditional open nephrectomy. This allows the surgeon to perform the surgery through a number of smaller incisions reducing the amount tissue damage the surgery causes.
Benefits of Robotic over Open Nephrectomy
Benefits of a robotic nephrectomy over a traditional nephrectomy include:
- Less pain
- Less fever complications
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
- Less internal scaring
